The French Defender of Rights and the Research Mission Law and Justice will organize on 18 and 19 January 2018 an international symposium entitled : The multiplication of discrimination criteria. Challenges, effects and prospects.

In France, the rise of domestic non-discrimination laws has been going hand in hand with the multiplication of discrimination criteria. In fact, while secondary legislation of the European Union includes seven criteria that are covered by the anti-discrimination directives, domestic law now refers to no less than twenty-five criteria. This phenomenon raises numerous questions, previously untouched, which need a retrospective look at the history and dynamics at work in the multiplication of those criteria as well as an assessment of their operational character, both in law and in the social field.

There is also the question of multiple combinations of these grounds, particularly through the notion of intersectionality. This multidisciplinary (law, sociology, political science, etc.) and comparative (Europe, USA) symposium will address the whole range of these issues. The symposium will be organized around three sessions: 1 - Genesis and expansion of the list of prohibited discrimination criteria; 2 - Social and legal discrimination criteria; 3 - The list of prohibited criteria, between multiple and intersectional discriminations.

There will be a French-English translation during the symposium.

The symposium will be held in the auditorium of the Defender of Rights: 20, avenue de Ségur - 75007 Paris - France.

Since the number of places is limited, we would thank you in advance for confirming your participation before 08/01/2018.
